Sanity's Shroud

In Sanity's Shroud you play as Alex, a schizoprenic death row inmate whose life was spared by partaking in an experiment.
What Alex doesn't know is that this experiment is a much worse faith than death.

Throughout the game you must try to keep your sanity. This is achieved by staying in the light, taking medication or solving puzzles. The lower your sanity drops the worse the world around you gets.

Alex's life gets spared from death row by participating in a new experimental prison sentence. He gets promised to be a free man afterwards.
He will be testing a new machine which makes it feel like his sentence is hundreds of years long, while only a few weeks pass by. He undergoes an intrusive brain surgery to receive an implant, Through which the machine will simulate his prison world while matching it to his sentence and psyche.
He accepts, not realizing that he'd rather be dead.
